AMARILLO TX (January 27, 2020) The Amarillo Hockey Association (AHAI) is pleased to announce the hiring of former professional player, Eric Andersen as the Hockey Director. Eric has been serving and dedicating his time for more than 10 years with AHAI. Andersen’s passion and respect for the game and the kids who play it has not gone unnoticed.

Andersen’s love for the sport began as a boy growing up in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Eric played his college hockey at Bemidji State University in Minnesota, and ultimately went on to have an outstanding professional career, playing in 391 games. 289 of those games were in an Amarillo jersey. Eric now serves on the Amarillo Fire Department.

“I couldn’t ask for a more organized leader to help the growth of our program. Not only is Eric a great mentor for our kids but a pillar of the community as a first responder. AHAI is honored to have Eric’s expertise and leadership.” said AHAI President Jason Chafe. “With growth comes great responsibility that the board and I take very seriously. This was a great opportunity for AHAI to make a commitment to an excellent candidate that has volunteered his time for over 10 years. We’re beyond excited for the future of our program and dedicated to make a profound impact in our community. This is a proud day for AHAI and we are ready to change kids’ lives!”

“Andy’s love for the kids and passion for his community, combined with his extensive hockey background, makes him the obvious and perfect fit as the Hockey Director for AHAI. We are beyond blessed to have Eric serve in this role and I am thankful every day that he is on our team.” comments Austin Sutter the Executive Director of AHAI.

The Amarillo Hockey Association has experienced a growth of over 168% over the past five seasons. Membership has increased by 236 participants since 2015, pushing the Association to just under 500 youth hockey players, adult hockey players and ice skaters this season.

“We have always been a business that takes pride in our adaptability. It is crucial for the continued success of AHAI that we are always looking for ways to progress and transform. Our mission isn’t to fit in. We strive everyday to offer the best sports program in the community, and the best hockey program in the country.” explains Sutter.

“I am very humbled to continue to be a part of this amazing organization. We have great players, coaches and outstanding families in our program. I look forward to the future of AHAI and hockey in the Texas Panhandle. I am most excited to see our players grow on and off the ice!” expresses Andersen.

Hockey is becoming a household name in the Texas Panhandle. For over 26 years there has been a following for the game in the community. Hockey is now one of the fastest growing sports in Amarillo and AHAI continues to be a leader in the Texas Hockey community.

2019-2020 Adult Hockey Information

By AHAI 07/13/2019, 1:15pm CDT

All the information you need to join the action...

The 2019-20 hockey season is quickly approaching! The ice will be available mid- late August. Hockey is growing tremendously in the Panhandle, including the adult leagues. We had tremendous success with our first ever Adult LTP program last year. We offered 30 spots and had them filled in less than a week. This season our goal is to fill 50 spots. We currently have 25 or more on the waiting list. The ALTP link will be open for registration on Wednesday July 17th. This program is extremely popular, so if you have friends, family or buddies that are wanting to play- please have them ready to sign up so they don’t miss out!

Adding 50 new spots will increase our numbers significantly. We expect over 80 returning players. We will have a total of 130 adult players available for the leagues this season.   Our goal is to field eight B League teams, and three A League teams this season. That’s an average of around 11-12 skaters and a goalie per team.

SCHEDULE:

Both leagues will start on September 15th, 2019. The last regular season games will end the weekend before Hockey Day in Texas – February 15 & 16, 2020. The playoffs will begin after Hockey Day and will end by Friday April 10th, 2020.

B League Schedule Format: We will do our very best to schedule the B league games on Sunday afternoon/ evenings. The B league will play their first game at 4:15 PM and the final game will conclude at 9:15 PM on each Sunday we have available ice. Scheduling games this way will be more practical and convenient for refs, score keepers and goalies. We may have to schedule some weekday games depending on overall ice availability.

A League Schedule Format: We decided to reduce the amount of A league teams from 4 to 3 this season to maximize the competitive spirit and increase the speed of play. The A league will play Monday- Thursday evenings depending on the weekly schedule and ice availability. Each team will rotate on a three- week schedule where they play one game/ week for two weeks and on the third week the team will have 2 games. By moving the B league to Sunday- the A league will now have earlier time slots on weeknights.

New Rules/ Regulations:

There will be no affiliate players this season. Players may only stay in the league they are assigned after registration. AHAI and the Hockey Operations Board will do their very best to fit players into the appropriate league. The ranking of players, and selection of players will be based on the following:

  • During registration there will be many questions the player is responsible for answering accurately. These questions will filter a system to rank players based on where they believe they stand, their overall experience and the preference of what league they desire to play in.
  • Previous years statistics
  • Any final decisions will be made by a selection committee comprised of team captains, and the Hockey Operations Board. The Hockey Operations board reserves the right to make any roster changes necessary, at any time if it is in the best interest of the leagues.

Here is some important information, so please read carefully and understand the timeline and deadlines for registration and other events.

AHAI Reveals New Look!

By AHAI 07/02/2019, 3:15pm CDT

The AHAI is excited to share our new look...

The Amarillo Hockey Association (AHAI) is getting a new look. The association has decided it was time for a new and improved logo. The goal was to create some separation from the Amarillo Bulls Junior Hockey Club, that plays Tier II Junior, in the North American Hockey League. The former AHAI logo was fashioning some confusion between AHAI (non-profit 501 ©) and the Bulls. The AHAI travel teams will still participate in the traditional Amarillo Bulls uniform, colors and will still obtain their logo on the front crest. The new AHAI logo will be used in marketing, stationary, social media, proposals and other business platforms.

“We are excited about our new and professional look. We are the fastest growing sport in the Texas Panhandle and the program deserves a logo that represents that. We will be investing in the community more, increasing our awareness through marketing as we are working towards establishing the program as the premier youth organization in the city”, says Austin Sutter, the Executive Director of AHAI.

The logo uses the Bulls “Victorian D” font and has their navy blue, and red color scheme. There is also a touch of gold and silver in the colors that represents our “gold standard” as a measure of the best, quality, and excellence. The trace of silver represents prosperity and modernity. The logo features a set of Bull horns that differentiate from the Bulls Jr. team’s official logo. It was also important to represent when the Association was formed in 1994, to let people know that youth hockey has been going strong in Amarillo for 25 consecutive years.
